Understanding IBD therapies: September patient evening

Published on 09/09/2026

On 9 September 2026, Edinburgh IBD hosted Understanding IBD therapies at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute of Genetics and Cancer. The patient evening combined an in-person event with an online livestream, bringing the conversation to people beyond Edinburgh.

Professor Charlie Lees discussed treatment principles, the main groups of medicines used for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and how treatment choices are made with patients. The programme also covered the use of steroids and why monitoring both symptoms and inflammation matters.

A panel discussion explored the practical steps involved in starting a new therapy, with time for questions from the audience. The focus was on explaining treatment clearly and helping people understand the decisions they make with their clinical team.

The evening followed our Patient Day in June. These events are part of Edinburgh IBD’s work to share information and create opportunities for conversation between patients, clinicians and researchers.
